Welcome to the next installment of our Begin to Knit series: Knitting in the Round!

Join Alison Doherty for this two-session class, which will teach you the basics needed to get started knitting in the round. Students will create their very own, one-of-a-kind Cowgirl Caterpillar Convertible Cowl in this course. You will learn how to join in the round and use a stitch marker, the basics of circular knitting, how to make a ribbed cuff, how to make an eyelet row, and how to add “caterpillar” design elements. New stitches demonstrated in this class include how to yarn over and knit two together, how to use purl stitch in the bind off, and how to bind off in the round.

In the first session, students will begin with a review of the long-tail cast on. Next you will learn to join in the round, use a stitch marker, and get started knitting. You will lean how to make a ribbed cuff using the knit stitch and purl stitch and how to add “caterpillar” design elements with hand-dyed yarns.

In the second session, students will learn two new stitches: the yarn over and knit two together, and use these new stitches to create an eyelet row. You will finish this class with binding off your knit and purl stitches in the round and create a braided drawstring to complete this project.

Homework: There is no homework for the first class. Students should come to the second class with the body of their convertible completed (9”).

    Cost: $60

Materials: One skein (~200 yards) of hand-dyed or randomly variegated yarn (sport, DK, worsted, or chunky), 16” circular needles, US size 4, 6, 8, or 10 depending on yarn weight, stitch marker, and darning needle.
