Introduction to Colorwork and Steeking: The Ultimate Mug Cardigan!

Only 4 left!

Colorwork and steeking are techniques that nearly every knitter strives to learn, but they can be intimidating. What better way to learn to knit colorwork than by making a non-intimidating mug cardigan!?

Also known as stranded knitting, colorwork allows you to knit with more than one color in each row. You can use this technique to create colorful motifs throughout your knitted pieces.

In the first class, participants will learn how to work stranded colorwork and how to read the chart that dictates how and when to use your colors. Participants will have one week between classes to finish the body of their mug cardigan and should come to class with their project bound off.

Steeking your knitting involves building an area in your work to be cut to create intentional holes (like sleeves), or to make cardigans, vests, and more!  However, cutting our hard worked knitting is utterly against our best judgement.  Never fear!

In the second class, Alison will guide you through steeking your piece and finishing your mug cardigan for a successful experience and to get you on the road to more intricate colorwork and steeked projects.

Prerequisites: Participants need to know how to do the long tail cast on, knit and purl, make ribbing, and how to knit in the round, ether with double point needles or with the magic loop technique, and how to bind off in the round.  Participants also need to know how to single crochet. These are all skills taught in our Begin to Knit series and our Begin to Crochet 101 classes!

Homework Prior to Class on June 6th: Participants need to CO 48 stitches with their main color, place a marker, and join in the round with their preferred circular knitting method. Complete the first five rounds of this project using the smaller needle size as follows: P1, K2, [P1, K1] to the last two stitches, K2.

Homework Prior to Class on June 13th: Participants should finish the body of their mug cardigan and bind their project off between the first and second class session.
