Unleash Your Inner Weaver: Master the Art of Overshot

Join Dorothy Tuthill, Cowgirl Yarn's expert weaving instructor and multi-published artist, for the Overshot Towel Hybrid Weaving Class!

This five-session hybrid class will guide you through the intricate process of creating beautiful Overshot Towels.

Choose the format that best suits your needs:

  • In-Person: Join us at the Fernwood Studio for hands-on learning.
  • Virtual: Connect with Dorothy and other students via Zoom.
  • Hybrid: Combine in-person and virtual sessions for the ultimate learning experience.

Using a 4-shaft loom (at least 24" wide) and 8/2 cotton yarn, Dorothy will guide participants through making six Overshot towels. These towels are designed to use the same size yarn (8/2 cotton) for warp, tabby weft, and pattern weft.

What You'll Learn:

SESSION ONE: LAYING THE FOUNDATION

Dorothy will discuss the Overshot technique and review warping a loom. Participants will prepare their warp and dress their looms. *Students are expected to warp their looms independently.

SESSION TWO: TREADLE ALTERNATIVES

Two weeks after the warping review, participants will show their first 1st towel done and Dorothy will discuss treadle alternatives.

SESSION THREE: ADDING STRIPES

Participants will show their progress on their six towels and have a Q & A session with Dorothy. She will show us how to add stripes to a towel.

SESSION FOUR: FINISHING TOUCHES

Come prepared with all of your last questions on how to finish the towels and Dorothy will demonstrate how to finish them.

SESSION FIVE (FINAL): TOWEL EXCHANGE

Bring your finished projects to the Fernwood Studio to and exchange 5 of your 6 towels with your fellow participants. Celebrate the completion of this project with drinks and snacks! Note: Out-of-town, zoom participants will need to mail five of their six towels to Cowgirl Yarn to participate in the exchange.

Parking: Participants can park for free in the First Interstate Bank parking lot down the street from Cowgirl Yarn during non-banking hours.

Pre-Requisites:

This class is intended for the advanced beginner weaver who can warp their loom with some review of techniques in the first session. A device capable of Zoom, including working speakers, microphone, and webcam is required for participating remotely.  4-shaft looms are available to rent from Cowgirl Yarn. This is a MAJOR time commitment to weave six towels in this amount of time! So please plan accordingly!

Homework:

Set time aside in your calendar to weave regularly outside of class times to complete this project on time!

Please Bring to Class:

- Maysville 8/2 Cotton, Ashford 8/2 Cottlin or Lunatic Fringe 5/2 for experimenting. 
Warp: 8/2 cotton (3360 yd/lb). Choose one color or two close colors, 2740 yds.
Tabby weft: 8/2 cotton, in the same color(s) as warp, or other colors, 2400 yds.
Pattern wefts: 8/2 cotton, about 700 yds per towel. 
- A 4-shaft loom at least 24" wide. (Cowgirl Yarn will have 4-shaft floor looms available to use during the class.)
- A Zoom-capable device, including a working microphone, speakers, and web camera if you will be zooming into class.
- Printed Instructions/ pattern draft available at the shop or emailed at the time of registration.

Lunch is not provided. However, there are many wonderful dining options within walking distance. We also have a refrigerator, microwave, and stove if you prefer to bring your own lunch.
