Unleash Your Inner Weaver: Master the Art of Shadow Weaving

Join Dorothy Tuthill, Cowgirl Yarn's expert weaving instructor and multi-published artist, for the Shadow Weave Towel Hybrid Weaving Class!

This five-session hybrid class will guide you through the intricate process of creating beautiful Overshot Towels.

What You'll Learn:

For the 2025 towel class, Dorothy has designed a colorful set of towels for you to weave while you explore the versatile technique of shadow weave (one of her favorite structures). The towels require a 4-shaft loom at least 24" wide, and 8/2 cotton yarn. You will also need a 10 dent reed and two shuttles. Students are expected to warp their looms independently.

Class will be five hybrid sessions; participants can join via Zoom, in-person, or a mix of both.

  • Feb. 12, Session one: Dorothy will discuss shadow weave, review warping methods, and answer questions in the Fernwood Studio. Participants will prepare their warp and dress their looms.

  • Feb. 26, Session two: Two weeks after the warping review, participants will show their first towel done and Dorothy will discuss treadling alternatives and show how to draft in shadow weave.

  • March 26, Session three: Participants will show their progress on their six towels and have a Q & A session with Dorothy. She will show us how to design and use profile drafts—a skill that you will find invaluable when you design your own fabrics.

  • April 16, Session four: Come prepared with all of your last questions on how to finish the towels and Dorothy will demonstrate how to finish them. We’ll also wind up the discussion of profile drafts.

  • April 26, Fifth and Final Session: Bring your finished projects to the Fernwood Studio to show off and exchange 5 of your 6 towels with your fellow participants. Celebrate the completion of this project with wine and snacks!

Note: Out of town participants will need to mail five of their six towels to Cowgirl Yarn to participate in the exchange.
