Ranunculus Knitting Class – October and November, 2026 (4 Sessions)

Level up your knitting skills with the popular Ranunculus sweater!
If you want to advance your knitting, learn how to really customize your sweaters, or you've just seen this sweater before and are a fan, then this is the class for you. With our expert teacher Hollie, you'll learn:
- How to choose a sweater size using finished measurements and desired ease
- How to measure and interpret gauge and understand how yarn/needle choices affect fabric
- How a top-down, seamless circular-yoke sweater is constructed
- How to read and follow a sweater pattern, including repeats and stitch counts
- Techniques used in the Ranunculus decorative yoke, including increases, decreases, and yarn overs
- How to read your knitting and identify common mistakes
- Basic troubleshooting and mistake correction, including using lifelines
- How to work short-row shaping
- How to separate sleeve and body stitches
- How to try on a top-down sweater and make decisions about fit and length
- How to return held sleeve stitches to the needles and work sleeves in the round
- Basic sweater finishing, including underarm finishing, weaving in ends, and blocking
- How to make simple modifications to personalize the finished sweater
Class Details:
Instructor: Hollie Descheneaux
Dates: 4 Mondays, October 5th & 19th and November 2nd & 16th, 2026
Time: 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Investment: $140
Location: Fernwood Studio in the basement of Cowgirl Yarn or outside on the patio if weather is awesome.
Parking: Participants can park for free in the First Interstate Bank parking lot down the street from Cowgirl Yarn during non-banking hours.
Skill Level: Intermediate
Minimum Age: High School
Max # of Students: 8
Prerequisites:
Students should be comfortable with:
- Casting on Knit and purl stitches
- Basic binding off
- Knitting in the round on circular needles
- Recognizing knit and purl stitches
- Following basic written knitting instructions
No previous experience knitting sweaters, lace, short rows, or garment shaping is required.
Please Bring to Class:
- The Ranunculus pattern by Midori Hirose (can be purchased in store)
- Yarn and knitting needles appropriate for their selected size and desired fabric
- Stitch markers
- Waste yarn or stitch holders
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Basic knitting notions
Students will need to complete and block a gauge swatch prior to the first class and bring it to class.
Homework:
- Purchase and download/print their own copy of the Ranunculus pattern by Midori Hirose
- Review the pattern and familiarize themselves with the overall construction
- Select and purchase yarn for their sweater
- Knit a gauge swatch using their selected yarn and recommended needle size (adjusting needle size if needed)
- Wash and block the gauge swatch as they would the finished sweater
- Bring the blocked swatch to the first class for measuring and discussion
- Take their bust/chest measurement to assist with size and ease selection
Do not cast on the sweater before the first class; we will review sizing, gauge, neckline options, and construction together before beginning.

4 students are needed for the class and it may be canceled if there are not enough students.
