Getting to Know Artistic Yarn by Abi

Maureen Johnson

Abi of Artistic Yarn by Abi, has been serving up whimsical self striping yarns for over 13 years and her gorgeous yarns have graced the shelves of Cowgirl Yarn for over a year now. Her complex and fun color ways from Watermelon to Wonder Woman to Rainbow Trout and everything in between have flown off the shelves and onto the feet of many of our customers over the last year.

Since Abi has been such a fun addition to the shop, we wanted to dive deeper and get to know her, so we decided to ask a few questions.

When did you start dyeing yarn and what was the initial inspiration?

I started dyeing yarn about 13 years ago. I started dyeing with kool-aid and quickly transitioned to acid dyes.

What is your favorite color way you make?

I absolutely LOVE to dye anything with speckles.

What first inspired you to get into fiber arts?

My mother taught me to knit when I was really young and is the one who first
suggested that I should dye yarn. She is one of the best knitters I know!

What is your favorite thing to knit?

My favorite thing to knit is.......socks! That is the whole reason I picked up
knitting again about 20 years ago.

Tell us a little about your favorite tools/needles:

I mostly knit socks and I knit them on double pointed needles. My favorite
needles are Chiaogoo metal double pointed needles. I like the way the yarn slides
easily on them and the tips are the perfect mix of sharp but not too sharp.

What are you making right now?

I have been knitting on a pair of socks, and also I have been making easter eggs
out of sock yarn.

What inspires your color ways?

Absolutely anything can inspire a colorway, but frequently they are inspired by
nature.

What's next for your business?

I have quite a few new sock yarns in the planning stages☺

You can meet Abi and pick up some of her amazing hand dyed yarns on April 13 10:30am-4pm during her special trunk show at Cowgirl Yarn!
